The Gandel Rehabilitation Center at Hadassah Mount Scopus represents a decisive expansion of this mission—dramatically increasing Israel’s rehabilitation capacity at a moment of unprecedented national need.
Hadassah International works globally to advance, sustain, and complete this transformative center, ensuring that Hadassah hospitals can meet both current and future rehabilitation demands.
Responding to a National Rehabilitation Crisis
Since October 7, Israel has faced a sharp and sustained surge in patients requiring intensive rehabilitation—soldiers and civilians alike. Thousands have survived complex trauma only to confront a long and demanding recovery process involving physical injury, neurological damage, and psychological trauma.
Even before the war, Israel faced a shortage of rehabilitation beds, particularly in Jerusalem. The Gandel Rehabilitation Center was conceived years earlier to address this structural gap. The events of recent years have made its completion not only urgent, but essential.
In response to immediate need, HADASSAH HOSPITALS accelerated the partial opening of the Center in January 2024, bringing advanced rehabilitation services online more than a year ahead of schedule. This early activation has already enabled thousands of patients to begin recovery without delay.
What the Gandel Rehabilitation Center Delivers
When fully completed, the Gandel Rehabilitation Center will be among the most advanced facilities of its kind in the region, designed specifically for complex, long-term rehabilitation.
Capacity and Scale
- Up to 132 inpatient rehabilitation beds, more than quadrupling previous capacity
- Treatment for over 10,000 inpatients and outpatients annually
- Approximately 28,000 square meters of dedicated rehabilitation space
Core Clinical Areas
The Center integrates multiple specialized departments, including:
- Neurological rehabilitation (stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury)
- Orthopedic and trauma rehabilitation
- Geriatric and chronic disease rehabilitation
- Ventilator-dependent and respiratory rehabilitation
Multidisciplinary Care Model
Each patient receives a personalized rehabilitation plan, managed by coordinated teams of:
- Rehabilitation physicians
- Nurses
- Physiotherapists
- Occupational therapists
- Speech and swallowing specialists
- Psychologists and social workers
- Dieticians and pain management experts
This integrated approach enables patients to address physical recovery, cognitive function, emotional resilience, and reintegration into daily life simultaneously.
Advanced Therapies and Healing Environments
The Center is purpose-built to support recovery through both innovation and environment.
Key features include:
- Robotic and gait-training systems for mobility restoration
- Hydrotherapy pools with temperature-controlled therapeutic programs
- Cognitive rehabilitation facilities, including “brain gym” technologies
- Dedicated pain management services
- Outdoor therapeutic gardens and rooftop healing spaces
- Family-inclusive areas to support long rehabilitation stays
- Underground protected facilities to ensure continuity of care during emergencies
Every design decision reflects a single principle: rehabilitation must treat the whole person, not only the injury.
Why Partnership Is Still Needed
While major progress has been achieved, the Gandel Rehabilitation Center is not yet fully complete. Several floors, treatment areas, and clinical units remain dependent on philanthropic partnership to come online.
Until full completion:
- Some patients face delays in admission
- Others must receive shortened or partial rehabilitation
- National capacity remains below projected long-term demand
Completing the Center is essential to ensuring that no patient’s recovery is compromised by lack of space, equipment, or staffing.
